Using the Calibration Curve in Making New Medicines

Pharmaceutical companies invest a lot on research and development. This allows the scientists to come up with new medicines that can make the patient feel better with less side effects.

There are many ways to test these drugs before these are released into the market. Some are tested on animals while some are administered to patients on a voluntary basis. The results are then analyzed and placed on a calibration curve, which will show if things are going well or not.

The calibration curve looks like a graph. In theory, a larger dose given to the test subject could mean better results but this should be carefully monitored to prevent an overdose. If everything is good, then various dosages are made which will then get FDA approval.

When this passes FDA standards, this is the time it can be introduced in the market. Some of the medicines made by pharmaceutical companies can be purchased over the counter but those that need to be prescribed will have to be approved by the doctor. The various dosages will really depend on the condition of the patient.

A good example of the calibration curve and the use of different dosages is when these are used to help a patient lose weight. Diet pills are only considered the second to the last resort if exercising is not enough to lose those extra pounds.

Most of these pills have side effects but since these are only short term since the body can adapt to it, doctors will still recommend this to the patient first before considering surgery.

The doctor can prescribe a higher dosage to get the desired effects if the previous recommendation is not working. Some of the diet pills in the market are addictive. This is the reason that these can only be used for a short period of time and the amount being taken should be decreased gradually to prevent withdrawal symptoms from happening.

Diet pills can only do so much for those who want to lose weight. In order to make the person lose those extra pounds without relying too much on the pills, people are still advised to exercise and continue a well balanced diet.

The calibration curve used primarily in analytical chemistry is the best way for scientists to come up with a drug that has the right concentrations that can help make a person lose weight. Using the same technique will also other products to be launched in the market.
